Polipoli Spring State Recreational Area is roughly 6,000 feet above sea level on the slopes of Haleakalā, Maui. Originally home to a native forest featuring koa and ‘ōhiʻa lehua, among others, the trees were completely decimated by the turn of the 20th century thanks to foreign impositions and a combination of trade and overgrazing cattle. In an effort to replant the forest, trees of high economic potential were favored over those with ecological value.
Walking through the natural fog belt today brings one past introduced redwoods and around trees recently burnt by a large fire in 2007 or knocked down by Hurricane Iselle in 2014. Change has different temporalities, made visible after decades of land misuse or always-fluctuating weather. One can only imagine what this forest might look like even in the near future as the world warms.

The haphazard disposing of such remnants sometimes reveals the various distant production origins of these citrus fruits.

*NOTE: All photos were unstaged and taken by the artist while traversing parts of Orange County on foot, a commendable feat in itself given its suburbanized layout and overt reliance on the individual automobile for transportation.

Haleakalā, Maui&#38;nbsp;🌋

An underfunded nature excursion consisting of entrance fees, waiting lines, sunrise permits, and telescopes.

At a time when public lands are being sold for extractive purposes, it is more important than ever to ask who these lands are meant to serve. Or, rather, who should be stewarding these lands?

		<description>Tantalus Trip:
Respect the&#38;nbsp;Rain Forest

Salvage Public
1170 Auahi Street
Honolulu, Hawaiʻi

July 27-August 17, 2018

Blending into the backdrop of the Ko‘olau Range sits Tantalus, one of many rejuvenation stage volcanoes dotting Honolulu. Unlike its contemporaries Diamond Head and Punchbowl which bookend the city—and have become gated icons of tourism and the American military, respectfully—Tantalus is a little less symbolic.

Instead, Tantalus is a destination for ecological restorationists, cyclists, architecture enthusiasts, drifters, pakalolo smokers, artists, downhill skateboarders, and hikers, a group of whom first gave it its modern name after failing to reach the seemingly evasive peak. Traditionally called Pu‘u ‘Ōhi‘a for the abundance of the native tree found near its summit, the mountain’s most prominent feature is now a number of radio towers, visible even from the ocean. The combined erasures of name and vegetation are not unrelated.

This photo series was gathered during years of running the same trails, documenting both changes over time and the everyday. The photos were all taken on disposable cameras as an acceptance of Tantalus’ normal rainy weather, which nourishes the forest, the streams, and, therefore, the city’s residents.

Proceeds from the show benefited the Mānoa Cliff Restoration Project and their efforts to replant a native forest on Tantalus. Please grab a pamphlet and take your own guided trip.

installed June 30-July 30
Get in touch for a studio showing.
This canvas was impermanently installed during the last month my partner and I were renting a studio apartment in Mānoa, Hawaiʻi. Our studio was over 200 square feet and cost $1,100 per month (utilities included!).
As a doormat, the canvas slowly accumulated dust and grime from the outside elements and from the bottom of shoes after a hard day’s labor, acting as a muted recorder of time and energy.
Anyone who visited our studio contributed to the piece, including friends, our landlord, and all the perspective renters who came for a showing in hopes of possibly filling the apartment after our move. Visitors undoubtedly saw our living area and my art “studio,” which doubled as our kitchen table. Thus, every showing was an exhibition of the rental space and an unknowing studio visit.
The current lack of affordable housing in Hawaiʻi makes having a designated space for art making incredibly difficult, let alone having a house at all. A study released around the time of this installation found that a family of four making under $93,300 a year in Honolulu would be considered “low-income.”

	Eviction Notice

CONTACT Zone&#38;nbsp;
Honolulu Museum of Art School

April 6-21, 2018

Beyond this unmarked gate in South Maui are Monsanto test fields. At the end of an otherwise innocuous dead-end street and adjacent to a foreign-trade zone, a large surveillance camera looms, ready to record any trespassers.

Hawai‘i is the center of biocolonialism, a ‘contact zone’ between the experimental genetically engineered crops of multinational agrochemical seed corporations and Indigenous practices of sustainable agriculture. On islands where around 90 percent of food is imported, large parcels of land are being used for nothing other than pesticide testing territories.

Riffing off Ai Weiwei’s Study of Perspective series in which he gives the finger to iconic monuments, this work suggests power is not as obvious in a globalized world. Residents on Maui voted to evict Monsanto in 2014, but the law has still not been enacted, thanks to a litany of judicial injustices and monetary sway over political (in)action.
